Organisers of a meeting on Sri Lanka in the House of Commons deny charges that it was a conspiracy against the Sri Lankan government.

‘There was no plot hatched,’ convener of the meeting, former mayor of Medway Dai Liyanage told BBC Sandesaya.

Mr. Liyanage was responding to allegations by Sri Lankan government that its opposition politicians met in the British parliament premises with Tamil Tigers for a conspiracy against Sri Lanka.

Resettlement and reconstruction

He said that this is the sixth meeting in a series that aimed at ‘uniting Sinhala Tamil and Muslim people’.

The meeting was held on the 25th of November in committee room 8 with opposition parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena and leftist politician Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne leading the discussion.

“Facts given by them at the meeting on the situation in the north was disputed by some who were supportive of the Sri Lankan government,” said Dai Liyanage.

Dr. Karunaratne told BBC Sandesaya on Monday that the meeting focussed on resettlement and reconstruction.

“However, without the representation of people, resettlement and reconstruction cannot take place,” he has told those who gathered.

‘Conspiracy’

Speaking to journalists on Monday in the Sri Lankan parliament, Construction, Engineering Services and Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa accused Dr. Jayawardena and Dr. Karunaratne of ‘conspiring against the Sri Lankan government with Tamil Tigers,’ in the meeting held in Westminster.

“The minister should get his facts right before making accusations of a meeting which was attended by Sri Lanka High Commission officials in London,” Dr. Karunaratne added.

MRK Lenagala, Minister Counsellor (Political) and Kapila Fonseka, Councellor Information represented the Sri Lankan High Commission at the meeting in Westminster chaired by Former BBC News Editor Clive Lawrence and attended by Former Labour Transport Minister Paul Clark. – (BBC)
