The National Police Commission has decided to remove former State Intelligence Service (SIS) chief, Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena, from the Sri Lanka Police service following a disciplinary inquiry into his actions prior to the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

The former SIS Chief was placed on compulsory leave by the National Police Commission (NPC) in July 2024, pending an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct during his tenure.

According to a formal disciplinary investigation report submitted to the NPC on July 4, 2025, by a three-member tribunal, Nilantha Jayawardena was found guilty of all charges mentioned in the charge sheet.

Accordingly, taking into account the seriousness of the offences, the National Police Commission, which convened on July 17, 2025, officially decided to dismiss Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena from service with immediate effect.
