MPs’ Rs. 1 million insurance coverage to be slashed

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs to reduce the insurance coverage limit granted for Members of Parliament from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 250,000.

At the Cabinet meeting held on 15-05-2023, approval was granted to implement a group insurance policy subject to a maximum insurance coverage of Rs. 1 million per parliamentary year. 

Accordingly, relevant insurance policies have been provided over the past period.

During the 2025 Budget Speech, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake proposed reducing the insurance cover limit of Rs. 1,000,000 to Rs. 250,000.

Following this, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the revised insurance limit of Rs. 250,000 for a Member of Parliament from the insurance year scheduled to commence on October 09, 2025.
