Chennai, Jan 7 (PTI) Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has apprehended ten Sri Lankan fishermen for allegedly fishing in Indian waters off Nagapattinam in the first such detention this year.
On Tuesday, an ICG Dornier surveillance aircraft had detected two Sri Lankan fishing boats in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone and ICG ship ‘‘Saarang’’ intercepted and detained the fishermen off Nagpattinam coast, an ICG release said.
The fishermen had 1,000 kg fish in their possession, it said.
However, due to unfavourable weather conditions, it took three days to escort the boats to Chennai, it said, adding that the fishermen were handed over to Chennai police today.
The boats were fitted with GPS devices and worldwide high frequency radio communication sets, the release said, adding, the CG was engaged in continued and extensive deployment of ships and aircraft in Indian maritime zones.
“Last year, a total of 103 boats with 511 crew members carrying 84,681 kg of fish were apprehended,” the release said.
