Landslides and earth slips devastate the hill country

At least 15 houses have been destroyed at 2nd Rajasingha Mawatha in Kandy by an earth slip while two persons were killed and some 15 have been injured, Ada Derana correspondent reported. Six of the injured are said to be critical and are receiving treatment at the ICU of the Kandy Hospital.


It was also reported that a child is still stuck in between the rubble of one of the houses and that Army, Police personnel with the assistance of the area residents are attempting to free the child.


Meanwhile landslide has occurred in Ampitiya, Mariyawatta resulting in the death of a 9 year old girl. The girl’s father, who is reported to be critically injured, has been admitted to the Kandy General Hospital.


Two houses in Bogambara, Kandy have also been gravely damaged leaving one person seriously wounded.


There are also threats of landslides and earth slips in several areas in the Central Province including Dodangala and Leiwella. Approximately 40 houses have been completely or partially destroyed in Kandy and surrounding area owing to inclement weather conditions and landslides, Ada Derana reporter stated.
