Only around 50 percent of the total number of busses were in operation within the Western Province today despite some bus operators having betrayed the token bus strike scheduled for today, The All Island Private Bus Company Federation President Stanley Fernando claimed.
Speaking to Ada Derana, he stated that the Federation will hold a press conference tomorrow to inform the public of its stand on the issue and to notify them of any further action to be taken. He added that some of the parties that had committed to the strike had betrayed the rest of the bus operators by postponing the protest.
Meanwhile, President of the Private Bus Owners Association, Gemunu Wijeyratne told Ada Derana that in the meeting held yesterday between the bus operators and the government, a promise was made in writing regarding the bus fare increase which was satisfactory.
Furthermore he stated that during a time in which people are coping with heavy rains and floods it was necessary to be sensitive to the public need. Wijeyratne also added that busses operated as normal around the island.
