Sri Lanka’s speed sensation Safiya Yamic re-wrote record books and won the gold medal in the Women’s 200m event at the South Asian Athletics Championships 2025 at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, Morabadi, Ranchi, a short while ago.

Yamic secured the gold medal by clocking a record timing of 23.58 seconds ahead of two Indian athletes.

She broke the games’ record held by India’s PT Usha who clocked 23.90 seconds in 1997.

Yamic also won the gold medal in the 100m and 4x100m relay events.

Safiya Yamic clinched the 100m gold medal with a new meet record of 11.53 seconds. Amasha de Silva secured silver with a time of 11.72 seconds, giving Sri Lanka a dominant 1–2 finish in the event.

Yamic also anchored Sri Lanka’s victorious Women’s 4x100m relay team.
