India and Japan aid the flood-affected by the tonnes

The Government of Japan has donated a consignment of emergency relief goods valued at 26.7 million rupees to the flood-affected people of the country. A statement issued by the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka states that the provided aid includes 400 tents and 2,000 sleeping mats.    


The flood relief goods were provided following a request made by the government of Sri Lanka, the statement further reads. 


The Japanese Embassy pointed out that attention will be drawn towards the needs of the people displaced due to the flooding in the Eastern Province and another consignment of aid will be delivered.


India vows to give more aid


Meanwhile the first consignment of 25 tonnes of emergency relief from India arrived in the country yesterday (January 14).


The aid comprising of pulses, sugar, salt and other essential ingredients for daily cooking, ready-to-eat meals, blankets, mattresses, bed covers, water purifying equipment and tablets was handed over to the Minister of Economic Development, Basil Rajapaksa, by Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha at the Bandaranaike International Airport.


The Indian aid will be distributed today in Batticaloa, which was amongst the worst-hit districts.


The Indian High Commission in a release promised to send material worth USD 1 million over the next few days. Ashok Kantha during the handing over of the relief had said that India was ready to give more aid to help Lanka face the humanitarian challenge.


The second consignment of Indian aid will arrive on January 17.
