President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, delivering the 2026 Budget Speech, announced that the Mahapola and Bursary allowances granted to university students will be increased by Rs. 2,500.

He stated that while these allowances were previously increased by the same amount under the Government’s first budget, the 2026 proposal aims to further support students amid the rising cost of living.

Accordingly, the monthly Mahapola allowance will be increased to Rs. 10,000, and the bursary allowance will be raised to Rs. 9,000.

In addition, the “Nipunatha Sisu Diriya Allowance” will also be increased by Rs. 2,500.
