Daily wage of estate workers to increase from Rs. 1,350 to Rs. 1,550, Rs. 200 attendance allowance proposed

The government has proposed to increase the daily wage of estate workers from Rs. 1,350 to Rs. 1,550 from January 2026.

Additionally, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has proposed to grant a Rs. 200 daily attendance allowance through the government.

A sum of Rs. 5,000 has been allocated for the programme through the 2026 Budget.

Meanwhile, a total of Rs. 4,290 million has been allocated with the assistance of the Government of India, for the construction of 2,000 houses to upgrade the housing and infrastructure facilities of the Malayagam Estate workers living in the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Southern Provinces.

Further, a sum of Rs. 1,305 million has been allocated for the completion of work on 943 houses currently in the Northern and Southern Provinces with the assistance of the Government of India, the President said in his 2026 Budget speech.
