Ten murders have been recorded in the past eight days in the Jaffna peninsula but no arrests have been made yet, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament today.
Mr. Wickremesinghe also said that these incidents didn’t happen as frequently even during the war time and questioned the government as to how crime rates could rise so high amidst so many high security zones in the area.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne in reply to this said that in terms of the other problems in the country this wasn’t as important. However, he added that the government is concerned about the rising crime rates in the North and will take the necessary action in the future.
