A special gathering had taken place in Jaffna today (January 22) to discuss immediate security procedures to counter the increasing number of murders and the robberies being reported in the Jaffna Peninsula.

The Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Jaffna District Secretary Imelda Sukumar, the Catholic Bishop of Jaffna Rev. Thomas Savundranayagam and several high ranking police officers participated in the meeting which took place at the District Secretariat, Jaffna.

Certain people are making false statements that the army is involved in these incidents, Major General Hathurusinghe had said during the discussions.

The army, which is there to protect the peace and for security affairs, will in no manner participate in illegal activities such as these, he stressed

Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe stated that the measures being carried out by the police to prevent these murders and robberies will only succeed if the public’s assistance is received.
