Sri Lanka Customs has discovered a stock of items worth over Rs. 8 million that had been illegally imported concealed in a container declared as potatoes. Custom officials state that they had discovered packets of intoxicating areca nut chew, beedi, tobacco dust and various cosmetic items in the container.

The items were discovered in one of two containers of potatoes that had arrived from India and had been brought down by a company that imports onions and potatoes in Pettah.

Officers of the special tasks and investigative unit of the customs had found the illegally imported items in an inspection following a tip-off that the unit had received, Superintendent of Customs Sisira de Silva stated.

The owner and a worker of the company that had imported the containers have also been apprehended by custom officers who are currently investigating the duo.
