Cracks in earth appear at Kochuveli

Cracks in the earth is said to have appeared in certain parts in Trincomalee today (January 23) morning. The residents of Kalapai Aru in Kochuveli had discovered these cracks which had caused the public to panic fearing a possible earthquake, the Kochuveli Police confirmed.


The police said that the several officers including the Kochuveli Police OIC are presently at the location and specialists including officials from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau are nearing the site.


Even though there are no signs of any immediate danger, due to word of the crack appearing in the earth making the rounds people in the area are flocking to witness the cracks causing interference to investigations, the Kochuveli police said.


Therefore the police advised that the public refrain from nearing the area and also urged people not to panic.
