New accusations against Lankan navy by TN fishermen

Just days after the row over alleged firing on Indian fishermen by the Lankan navy, Indian Media reports that an Indian fisherman was killed mid-sea last night, allegedly by the Lankan navy.

Jayakumar, a fisherman from Tamil Nadu, was allegedly pushed into water and strangulated by Lankan navy officers, NDTV (New Delhi Television Limited) reported today. Jayakumar reportedly did not know swimming.

Two other fishermen including his (Jayakumar) brother returned to Nagapattinam with the victim’s body on Sunday (January 23) morning.

When Ada Derana contacted Navy Spokesman Captain Athula Senarath and queried on the issue the spokesman strongly denied any such occurrence. “Such accusations have been repeatedly directed towards the navy in recent times and there is absolutely no truth in these reports” he said.

False statements such as these are being made by pro-LTTE groups in India in order to tarnish the image of the Sri Lanka government and navy and therefore no one should be concerned about such propaganda, he stressed.

“The duty of the navy is only to protect the marine border of the country” Captain Athula Senarath further pointed out.
