The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has issued a notice ordering the Officer-in-Charge of the Minor Complaints Division of the Cinnamon Gardens Police, who conducted investigations into a case filed against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and six other accused, to appear before court.
The case was filed on charges of causing public inconvenience by staging a protest that blocked roads around the United Nations office located in Thunmulla, Colombo in 2016.
The protest was staged opposing the 2016 Sri Lanka visit of then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
The case related to the incident was taken up today (19) before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama. During the hearing, evidence of the complainant was recorded from two witnesses under the supervision of the Cinnamon Gardens Police.
After considering the facts presented, the Chief Magistrate issued notice directing the Officer-in-Charge of the Minor Complaints Division of the Cinnamon Gardens Police to appear before court on March 9.
