Stalin seeks Modi’s intervention on welfare of Sri Lankans living in Tamil Nadu

February 15, 2026   04:52 pm

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rescind the previous administrative instructions that "block" the consideration of citizenship applications of Sri Lankans living in the state.

He emphasised that more than 40 per cent of Sri Lankans currently living in Tamil Nadu were born on Indian soil.

Stalin requested the Indian PM to provide administrative waivers for passport and visa requirements when the Sri Lankans apply for citizenship using the Tamil Nadu government-verified documents instead.
