The government intends to strike at the people’s pockets through excessive fining for traffic offenses as the Traffic Police are given weekly traffic fine targets that they have to meet while the government is looking for any excuse to impose fines on the people, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva stated.

He further added that the objective is no longer for Policemen to make sure that the motorists obey the traffic laws but to jump out from behind trees and posts in order to fine motorists who have already broken the law.

He added that because the government sends weekly circulars stating a target for the amount that needs to be collected through traffic fines, these policemen have no choice but to resort to these methods in fear of losing their jobs.
