President chairs discussion on water management amidst dry weather

A discussion on water management was held this afternoon (02) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in view of prevailing weather and climate variations, the potential onset of El Niño conditions and the commencement of paddy cultivation for the Yala season.
During the discussion, attention was given to projected rainfall for the year based on forecasts, as well as the current water levels in reservoirs, with deliberations supported by statistical data, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).
Particular focus was placed on ensuring the uninterrupted supply of energy through hydropower generation, meeting drinking water requirements and releasing water necessary for cultivation during the Yala season. Accordingly, the required water management measures were reviewed, the statement said.
Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K. D. Lalkantha, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation D. P. Wickremasinghe , Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara, Director General of Mahaweli Authority, H.M.J.K. Herath, Director General of Irrigation Kithsiri Waligepolage, Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board Engineer Chandana Bandara, along with a group of senior officials from relevant institutions, were present at the discussion.
