22 monks arrested with over 110kg of ‘Kush’ and ‘Hash’ at BIA

A group of 22 monks has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for the possession of ‘Kush’ cannabis and ‘Hash’ narcotics estimated to be valued at over Rs. 110 million.

 

According to intelligence received by the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), the suspects were apprehended during an operation conducted last night (25) by officers attached to the airport unit of the bureau, Ada Derana reporter said.

 

During the search, officials had discovered more than 110 kilograms of “Kush” and “Hashish” concealed inside specially modified false compartments in their luggage. The drugs had been hidden alongside school supplies and various confectionery items. 

 

It is reported that each suspect was carrying over 5 kilograms of narcotics in their travel bags.

 

Investigations have revealed that the suspects had departed Sri Lanka for Thailand on the April 22 using airline tickets provided by a sponsor. While there, they had reportedly changed into civilian attire and engaged in various activities. 

 

Photographs and video footage of these activities were later recovered from their mobile phones by the Police Narcotics Bureau.

 

Officials state that this seizure is the largest quantity of narcotics ever detected at the BIA. 

 

It is also the first recorded instance of a group of individuals in monastic robes being arrested at the BIA in connection with drug trafficking.

 

The suspects are said to be young monks from various parts of Sri Lanka, many of whom are reportedly pursuing higher education at different institutions.

 

They are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today (26) for further legal proceedings.
