Three-wheeler operators call for fare hike and higher fuel quota

The National Joint Three-Wheeler Drivers and Industrial Workers’ Association (NJTWDIWA) has called for an increase in three-wheeler fares following yesterday’s fuel price revision.

The Secretary of the union, L. Rohana Perera said that the price of a litre of petrol has risen by Rs. 12, making a fare revision necessary.

Perera pointed out that three-wheeler fares are regulated by the Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority, and accordingly, a request has been made to increase the charge for the second kilometre by Rs. 10, from the current Rs. 90.

At present, fares stand at Rs. 100 for the first kilometre and Rs. 90 for the second kilometre. He stressed that raising the second kilometre fare to Rs. 100 is essential and urged the relevant authorities to take prompt action.

Perera further highlighted that three-wheeler operators are facing significant hardship due to fuel restrictions and appealed for an increase in the fuel quota.

“We rely on our daily earnings to meet leasing and finance payments. With these constraints, it is becoming increasingly difficult for those in the industry to continue. We are not asking for anything unreasonable—at the very least, we request a weekly fuel allocation of 30 litres,” Perera said.

He also dismissed claims made by some within the sector regarding high daily travel distances and fuel demands, stating that such assertions are unrealistic and do not reflect the position of the wider association.
