Candidates using Women‘s Day events for propaganda

March 7, 2011   03:49 pm

Complaints have been made that government sponsored events organized in view of the International Women’s Day (March 8) are being used for propaganda purposes by some candidates ahead of the local government elections, the Elections Commissioner stated.

Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake added that candidates were using these events to distribute food and other items while delivering talks regarding their candidacy at these events unethically.

He requested all the political parties and independent groups to leave party politics and election campaigning out of these events.
