The UNP will fight to re-establish an independent Elections Commission and an independent Elections Commissioner in the country as the government had used its powers unethically during the local government elections, MP Mangala Samaraweera stated.

He stated that the government had claimed the powers of the Elections Commission and the Commissioner as well as the independent Police Commission with the 18th amendment while he claimed that the public saw how the government used these powers unethically during the election time.

He further added that it was commendable that the UNP received 35% of the votes as a single party despite the lies spread in the media about the party.
