India beat defending World Cup champions Australia by five wickets to reach the semi finals of the 2011 ICC World Cup finals. India will play against Pakistan at the semi finals at Mohali on March 30. Australia 260 for 6 and India 261 for 5.
The innings centered on a match-winning innings by Yuvraj Singh while Indian supporters in Ahmedabad encouraged their players to knock out defending World Cup champions Australia out of the semis.
For the Aussies, Ricky Ponting’s 104, his first century for 13 months, took the team to put up a reasonable score of 260-6.
For co-hosts India it was a not-too-difficult target, though at times they looked like giving the game away to their opponents, like the run-out of Gautam Ghambir, who added 50. The Little Master Sachin Tendulkar, on his way to surpass 18,000 runs in ODIs, the first ever cricketer in the world to do so, made 53.
Suresh Raina (34 not out from 28 balls) and Yuvraj (57 not out) saw India to a five-wicket win with 14 balls to spare to push out Australia from the ICC 2011 World Cup semi finals.
