PHIs and Midwives in Matara abstain from vaccinations

Public Health Inspectors (PHI) and Public Health Midwives (PHM) in the Matara District have decided to resort to trade union action from today (March 29) onwards.
Chairman of the Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Association, Upul Rohana stated that the decision had been made due to the accusations directed towards PHIs regarding the deaths that had occurred last year due to rubella vaccinations.
The Southern Province Health Secretary had acquitted all supervising officers following investigations into the relevant incidents and had put the blame on the Public Health Inspectors, said Upul Rohana explaining the reasons to their actions.
As the Health Secretary has failed to withdraw these accusations the Public Health Inspectors’ Association and the Government Midwives’ Association jointly will abstain from any vaccination services, he added.
