Sri Lanka wants Czech tourists, direct flights from Prague

Sri Lanka is interested in the resumption of direct flights from Prague and it wants to attract Czech tourists, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Gamini Lakshman Peiris said after a meeting with his Czech counterpart Karel Schwarzenberg.

Schwarzenberg said he is in favour of direct flights, but added that this is up to air carriers.

The direct flight to Colombo was operated by the Czech CSA some years ago.

The number of foreign tourists in Sri Lanka rose by 46 percent to 655,000 last year.

Tourists are returning to the country after a conflict with the separatist Tamil Tigers was ended.

Peiris said his country offers specialised tourism. He mentioned among others Buddhism, Ayurveda medicine, rain forests, the jungle and old civilisations sights.

Peiris also signed in Prague Monday an agreement on promotion and mutual protection of investments.

Czech firms are increasingly active in Sri Lanka. They invest mainly in infrastructure, energy industry, water management and tourism, CTK reports.
