The alleged earth tremor reported in Kirinda recently was not a natural earthquake, says the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB). The cause has been identified as the collapsing of a concrete beam in a residence in the area due to poor structuring, Chairman of the Bureau Dr. N.P.Vijayananda said.
Most of the cracks in the walls in certain houses in the area are those that had appeared long before, he claimed.
Minor tremors experienced in several parts of Hambantota previously were also caused as a result of the construction work carried out in the Hambantota harbor, it was later unraveled, Dr. Vijayananda mentioned pointing out that the Kirinda tremor had also occurred due to human activities.
