Petition against pension bill to be taken up today

The petition filed against the proposed Employees’ Pension Benefit Fund bill for the private sector, stating that it contravenes the constitution is to be taken up at the Supreme Court today (April 29).
The attorney-general has been named as the respondent of the petition, which is scheduled to be taken up before a Supreme Court Judge Bench comprising Chief Justice Asoka de Silva, Justice Shirani Thilakawardana and Justice K. Shripavan.
The draft bill was presented to Parliament on April 08 while the debate on the bill was to commence on the 27, however it had to be postponed due to the petition being filed.
Furthermore private sector employees and opposition parties have expressed their disapproval regarding the bill.
