Amnesty for prisoners marking Sambuddha Jayanthi

The Ministry of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation has decided to release several prison inmates to mark the 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi. Prisoners serving short prison terms for minor offenses and unable to pay fines will be released in this manner, Maj. Gen. V.R. de Silva stated.


The Commissioner General of Prisons revealed that a list of such inmates has been presented to President Mahinda Rajapakse by the Ministry.


In addition the President has also been requested to grant amnesty for prisoners above the age of 70, he further added.


Similarly 1623 prisoners received Presidential Pardon on Independence Day.
