Sri Lanka seeks more jobs for skilled workers in Qatar

Sri Lanka is seeking more job opportunities in Qatar for skilled workers in different sectors, says Dilan Perera, Minister for Foreign Employment and Welfare, who is on an official visit to the country.
“We have come to Qatar on a special vision to share with Qatar’s experience we have gained in providing human resources to our own development,” he said.
“The number of skilled and semi skilled Sri Lankan workers coming to Qatar has increased tremendously, and those are the sectors we would like to work on,” the minister further said.
Minister Perera and a delegation from his ministry who are now on a visit here to attend the Doha Forum, held discussions with recruitment agency representative and officials of various companies yesterday.
The minister explained that Sri Lanka is providing proper training to and developing the English and Arabic language skills of the employees seeking foreign employment.
“By fine tuning the skill development programme in Sri Lanka in addition to training on language in the training programme I’m sure we will keep on improving in skilled and semi skilled employment,” Minister Perera explained.
Sri Lanka is also paying more attention to cater to the needs of manpower in Qatar for all its projects aimed at the FIFA 2022 World Cup and 2030 Vision, especially to share skilled employees in building stadiums, with Sri Lanka’s recent experience of building three new international stadiums.
“All projects would require skill and semi skill personnel which we are ready to provide,” he said.
“We are even ready to open up special training institutes especially for Doha, if investors are willing to come and open up training centre for Doha, well, our ministry is ready to participate in that.”
He also explained that Sri Lanka is leading in South Eastern countries in human development index, only behind China, with educational achievements and a literacy rate of 90.7 as the country provides free education from primary to university level.
He also said the higher number of technical colleges too are playing a major role in supporting to develop their skills.
The minister further promised job recruiters that the delays occurring at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha would be soon solved.
Earlier at the event A. Tharmakulasingham, Charge d’Affaires of Sri Lanka and D D P Senanayake, Deputy Manger of the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment explained on various issues related to the human resources availability in Sri Lanka, The Peninsula reports.
