The Anuradhapura Police has commenced investigations into the suicide of a second year student monk of the Anuradhapura Buddha Shrawaka Bikkhu University.
It is suspected that the monk had consumed poison in his chamber at the Sirisangabo Meditating Center, Anuradhapura where he had been residing.
Other bhikshus at the center had contacted the police after discovering the body of the student monk in his chamber at around 9am yesterday (May 09).
A letter written, on three pages of a notebook, by the monk prior to committing suicide had been discovered by police officers upon inspecting the living quarters.
"The gift I received for not taking part in protests and demonstrations was having my exam results withheld", the letter (pictured above) had stated according to police.
Anuradhapura Police suspect that the monk might have been depressed due to having been punished for actions that he had not committed resulting in the consumption of poison.
It is said that the name of the monk in question is amongst the 33 Bikkhu students, whose exam results were withheld due to a ragging incident in the Anuradhapura Buddha Shrawaka Bikkhu University.
