The knowledge and talent thousands of students obtain through local Universities are some of the finest in the country. But local business scene’s main access to this resource of educated personal is through individual applications made by students for specific companies. The Rotaract Club of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science, is trying to change this method, by providing an opportunity for the corporate sector of Sri Lanka to access the students of the Faculty of Science in one place, through ‘Future Challenge’.

‘Future Challenge’ is a Professional Development Programme organised by the Rotaract Club of the Faulty of Science, University of Colombo, involving a series of activities, held with the primary objective of amalgamating the local academic arena with the corporate world.

The core of this programme is the Career Day. This year, the ‘Future Challenge 2011 – Career Day’ takes place on the 14th May on Faculty premises with the participation of many prestigious companies in Sri Lanka. A. Baurs & Co. Pvt.) Ltd., Amba Research Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd., Genetech, GlaxoSmithKline, Hayleys PLC, Hemas Holdings PLC, IFS, Janashakthi Insurance PLC., MAS Holdings, , MillenniumIT, Sampath Bank, Stax Inc., Virtusa, and will be present to meet, interview and recruit a diverse group of perhaps Sri Lanka’s finest Science undergraduates. The undergraduates are given the opportunity to apply for placements in these companies prior to the event with interviews for short-listed candidates conducted on the Career Day. These companies will have the ability of interviewing students of a large range of subjects, from Molecular Biology to Computational Physics to Industrial Statistics and Financial Mathematics under one roof. As many of the undergraduates are also armed with other professional qualifications,
this event truly brings together the best of both worlds, and creates a mutual support system between the corporate and education systems.

The Rotaract Club of the Science Faculty has also held a complementing and essential mix of workshop, forums, presentations, and expert discussions prior to the event to better prepare the undergraduates participating at the ‘Future Challenge’ this year. Starting with how to prepare the best possible CV and making an effective presentation, these workshops provided the undergraduate with advice from people involved in the industry on how to effectively project oneself to prospective employers. The series of workshops also included an interactive Mock Interview session, where participants are put through mock interviews and given immediate feedback on their performance by experienced personnel. In times where the local graduates are given unpleasant reputations with regard to employment, these workshops will allow the students of the Faculty of Science to become some of the most employable undergraduates in the country.

Already in its fifth year running, ‘Future Challenge’ pairs up the future with the present. The communication it opens up between the corporate sector and the undergraduates, helps the employers to specify the skills needed and grants hundreds of students awareness and exposure to a world many of them will step into in the future. The students of the Faculty of Science of the University of Colombo, armed with extensive knowledge, talent and determination, are now ready to take on the challenge of the corporate world.
