A Sri Lankan housemaid who allegedly stole more than BD8,000 worth of gold jewellery from an Indian family has been arrested in Bahrain.
Bahrain’s Interior Ministry yesterday confirmed she had been traced and was being questioned.
“She (the maid) was taken in custody after being questioned by the police,” said a source.
“There is no evidence against her and she was not under the sponsorship of the family.
“The case is still under investigation.”
The 48-year-old had been accused of taking 450gm of jewellery from the house of her employer in Manama last Saturday.
A complaint was lodged at Hoora Police Station.
An illegal worker, she was reportedly taken on by the Indian family, who have two children, two weeks ago.
The Indian couple returned from work to notice their belongings had gone and the jewellery allegedly missing.
The expatriate, who MWPS officials confirmed came to Bahrain in September 2010, had reportedly run away twice before.
The Indian couple were aware the maid had been arrested, but had no information about the missing gold.
“We have no idea if she has spoken of our gold or not,” said the husband.
“I got a call from the police station saying they had tracked her and questioned her.
“They also said that she is custody now, but no other details were provided.” (Gulf Daily News)
