UNP urge govt. to withdraw pension bill and bring new proposals

The United National Party is opposed to the proposed private sector pension bill, Ranil Wickramasinghe declared. The UNP leader accused that the pension scheme is an attempt by the government to steal the money from workers.


Speaking during a meeting with representatives of trade union affiliated to the UNP at party headquarters Sirikotha today (20) the Opposition Leader stated that retirement pensions belong to the workers as it is their right and that has been accepted by most of the countries in the world.


“Why are we listening to this discredited institution (IMF), why are we trying to steal the money from the workers?”


Therefore we oppose it (pension bill) and we call upon the government to withdraw it and to bring a new set of proposals in consultation with trade unions, the employers’ federation and the political parties in Parliament, Wickramasinghe expressed.


He said that if necessary the UNP will carry on agitation for this purpose and that they are prepared to do that with all other organizations which are against the pension scheme.
