Lanka likely to be off the hook at UNHRC session

May 25, 2011   11:48 am

Sri Lanka is unlikely to be badgered at the forthcoming UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session in Geneva, given the fact that the rights situation in the country is not listed in the agenda, and Russia and China are in the council to counter any move by the US and UK, media reports.

The 17th session is to be held from May 30 to June 17.A recent UN panel had levelled charges of “war crimes” against the Lankan government.

India is not a member of the UNHRC at present. However, since the Western bloc and several Afro-Asian countries are believed to go along with India in matters relating to Sri Lanka, it would like to secure New Delhi’s support.

It is in the light of this need that the Sri Lankan media and political circles viewed the recent visit of the Lankan External Affairs Minister G L Peiris to New Delhi, Indian Express reports.
