UPDATE: IGP Mahinda Balasuriya retires

Inspector General of Police(IGP) Mahinda Balasuirya has handed over his resignation, Defence Ministry confirms. Balasuriya joined the Police Department in 1978 and was appointed IGP on November 2, 2009 following the retirement of the then IGP Jayantha Wickremaratne.

 

The Defence Ministry adds that the IGP’s resignation creates history in public accountability in Sri Lanka.


Speaking to Ada Derana Director General President’s Media and Spokesman Bandula Jayasekara said that the IGP had handed in his retirement papers to the President and will go on leave with immediate effect until retirement date on June 18.
