Sri Lankan woman, twin daughters charred to death in Chennai

Three members of a family, all Sri Lankan nationals in India, were charred to death after a fire broke out in their residential apartment in the posh Chetpet area of the city last night. Police said the deceased were identified as Jaya (45) and her twin daughters aged 12.

The mishap, which occurred in the second floor apartment situated at Lamech Avenue on the Spur Tank Road around 2000 hrs, came to light after neighbours saw smoke billowing out of the house and informed the police.

Since a camphor packet was found near the bed where Jaya was found dead, police suspect it to be an accident.

One of her twin daughters was found dead on the floor and the other in the bathroom.

The girl in the bathroom might have died of suffocation as thick smoke engulfed all the rooms in the house.

When police and fire service personnel broke open the door, Jaya’s elder daughter aged 16 and her 56-year-old husband Gyana rushed out of the house with burn injuries.

They were admitted to a hospital. The couple were Sri Lankan nationals. Since they arrived in the city only last month, neighbours had little clue about the family. The cause of the fire was being ascertained, police added, UNI reports.
