Actress Jacqueline Fernandes jokes that she used to live in a zoo. She says that she had so many pets at her home in Colombo (in the western province of Sri Lanka) that everybody used to say that it is no less than a zoo.
“You can’t imagine how many pets I used to have in Colombo. I used to have seven dogs, two cats, a huge aquarium that had goldfish and turtles in it and I had rabbits too. I have such beautiful memories with them. I think every child should be allowed to play with animals. They learn to be humble and they become more caring. I have distinct memories of my pets and I still play with the ones that are there now when I go back to Colombo,” says Jacqueline, who shifted to Bahrain from Sri Lanka when she was three-years-old. Though she settled in Bahrain with her Sinhalese father and Malaysian mother, she kept returning to Sri Lanka.
But the best part of her memories in Sri Lanka, Jacqueline says are her horses that she used to ride. She says that she rode horses whenever she had the time. “I miss my horses so much. I know that in Mumbai you can ride too but there’s nothing near my place and one has to travel to lot to get to the stables. So, riding horses have become impossible when I shifted to Mumbai. Horses are such magnificent creatures and if you are a rider, you will always miss riding. To start off I wish to be a member of a riding club again. May be, I will own one too someday. It’s on my wishlist. Also, it’s so much fun taking care of horses. In fact they need more pampering than a human being does. By God’s grace, you will see me riding on a horse again,” the actor says.
So, doesn’t she want to have a pet here in Mumbai? “Oh yes! In my last apartment I had a kitten which was simply awesome and very cuddly. But now I have moved houses and I had to give up that cat,” she rues. (DNA)
