251 prisoners escaped in 2010 - Report

A total of 251 inmates and suspects have escaped from Sri Lanka’s prisons within the year 2010 while approximately 152 prisons inmates had died of natural causes within the same year, according to a prisons report.


The annual report for the year 2010, recently presented to parliament states that all 152 deaths, occurred within the island’s 26 prisons, were fully investigated and confirmed.


15,839 prisoners were freed within the year 2010 for completing their sentences and others given amnesty on special occasions, it also revealed.
