Colombo High Court today (June 27) sentenced four persons including former Deputy Minister Chandana Kathriarachchi to five months rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 years for unlawful assembly in a murder site.

Kathriarachchi and the other suspects were previously remanded on July 1, 2010 over alleged involvement in the murder of C.D. Chandrarathne in Piliyandala on August 24, 1996.

However they were released on bail on August 5 the same year by the Colombo High Court.

They had pleaded guilty to several other charges including unlawful assembly after the Attorney General withdrew the murder charges.

Therefore High Court judge Ms. Kumudini Wickramasinghe sentenced them to five months rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 years in addition to a fine of Rs. 5000.

The accused including Chandana Kathriarachchi, an ex-parliamentarian during the PA government, have also been ordered to pay each family member of C.D. Chandrarathne with Rs. 100,000 and a sum of Rs. 25,000 to an individual injured in the incident.
