2 held for bid to smuggle tobacco to Sri Lanka

An Indian Q Branch police team has detained two persons in Ramanathapuram for attempting to smuggle tobacco, worth around Rs.400, 000 to Sri Lanka.


The arrested were identified as Nagarajan of Akkalmadam and Pusba Dhanraj of Ariyankundu.


Police said a Q branch team conducted a surprise raid near Ariyankundu and spotted two persons roaming about in a suspicious manner.


On interrogation, they revealed they had concealed tobacco bundles in a nearby bush. The team later recovered 10 tobacco bundles worth 120, 000 Indian rupees in the Indian market.


The tobacco bundles were to be smuggled to Sri Lanka by illegal ferry where the cost of the tobacco comes to Rs.400 000 in Sri Lanka, Express News Service reported.
