Body of ransom victim to be exhumed today

The body of a victim killed over the non-payment of ransom is scheduled to be exhumed today from Batticaloa, the Colombo Crimes Division(CCD) said today. According to police the body is alleged to be of Madurankuliye Pattanarasi who was abducted February 11, 2010.


Pattanarasi was the head of a non-governmental organisaiton(NGO) had been on a work related trip to Batticaloa when he was abducted. An unidentified gang had then called the wife and relatives of the victim and demanded a ransom of Rs. 20 million for his release.


Thee family had then lodged a complaint with the Mundalama police who had transferred the case to the CCD claiming political interference. The CCD had later arrested three suspected in relation to the abduction and one of whom is alleged to have close ties with a strong politician. Upon interrogation the suspects had revealed the site where the body of Pattanarasi was buried.


The CCD said that police protection has been provided to the burial site and that the exhumation will be done today.
