Johnston warns retailers ‘hoarding’ cement

August 1, 2011   04:54 pm

Minister Johnston Fernando has instructed the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to take stern legal action against the sale of cement above the control price of Rs.750 and traders hoarding stocks.

The main reason for the prevailing shortage of cement is the recent shutting down of Pakistani company supplying cement to Sri Lanka, the Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister states in a release.

As cement can only be stored for a time period of 3-5 months, hiding cement bags is a clear violation of consumer laws, he said.

The Minister further assures that steps have been taken to import cement without delay and once arrived in the island it will be distributed through the Building Materials Corporation.

According to Minister Fernando the cement stock being imported is set to arrive in the country by next week.
