Incidents such as the importing of substandard cement and petrol are clear indications of the corruption within the government, General Secretary of the UNP Tissa Attanayake stated.

Speaking at a press conference held today (August 9) in Colombo, he commented on the issue of substandard cement being imported to the country, stating that there was a conspiracy behind the event while thanking the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) for the manner in which they handled the situation.

He also announced that the UNP hopes to compile its nominations list for the remaining local government bodies by Wednesday while the nominations will be submitted on August 24 or 25.

He added that the UNP was ready to face the elections and will hope to battle for control over the Municipal Councils including Colombo.
