A group of candidates elected from the United National Party for Chilaw Urban Council and Pradeshiya Sabha have withdrawn from their the scheduled hunger strike today after reaching a settlement with the party leader.
They had decided to launch a hunger strike in protest to Opposition Leaders and Organizers not being named from the elected Local Government members.
The group has arrived in Colombo today in order to take part in the hunger strike, Puttalam district UNP parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara said.
However, they had attended discussion at the Opposition Leader’s office after being invited by UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe.
Mr. Wickramasinghe had agreed to appoint Opposition Leaders and Organizers in the order of highest preferential votes received in the Local Government election and therefore they have opted to withdraw from the hunger strike, Range Bandara stated.
