US welcomes govt. proposal on lifting emergency laws

The United States welcomed the government’s move to lift the emergency regulations currently implemented in the country following an announcement made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in parliament today (August 25).

 

The US Embassy released the following statement regarding the announcement,

 

“The United States welcomes President Rajapaksa’s announcement in Parliament that the Emergency Regulations will lapse at the end of August. This is a significant step towards normalizing life for the people of Sri Lanka, and reflects more than two years without terrorist activity after the defeat of the LTTE”.
