The removal of emergency laws is democratic only in a country which is governed by laws, says Anura Kumara Dissanayake. There is no law in this country, he told media today (August 26).

There is no democracy in a country that has no law, the JVP Parliamentarian pointed out.

He further pointed out that Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne on August 09 in a statement had given certain reasons for extending the state of emergency.

“How did those reasons become void within just 16 days?” the JVP inquired.

Therefore, he pointed out, an issue rises regarding the legitimacy of the facts presented by the government in regard to extending emergency laws.

Anura Kumara stated that if the information provided were false, the government has hitherto provided false information to Parliament to extend the state of emergency.
