Carson Cumberbatch PLC sponsors the centenary “Shakspeare Shield” Golf Tournament

Carson Cumberbatch PLC over the last century has been the sponsor of the prestigious “Shakspeare Shield” Golf Tournament according to a company spokesperson. The Tournament is currently under way at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC). The competition began in the year 1911 was founded by W Shakspeare, an elected Committee member of the Royal Colombo Golf Club and also a pioneering Director of Carson and Company.
The Shakspeare Shield is the only tournament open to RCGC members who are employees and /or Directors of registered companies, embassies, government departments and service organizations. This tournament has gained tremendous popularity with over 50 establishments participating in the centenary year tournament. Originally only men could play in this tournament, but at the sponsor’s request, lady members too can now participate. This event has continued uninterrupted for the past 100 years and is keenly contested year on year.
Mr. Mano Selvanathan – Director, Carson Cumberbatch PLC, commenting on the association with the “Shakspeare Shield” Golf Tournament, said, “This event is the oldest sponsored corporate event at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, and we are honoured to be the sponsor of this prestigious event that has been held for over a century.” “Honouring the contribution made by Mr. Shakspeare, we will continue to sponsor this event in the years to come”.
Carsons are honoured to be associated with the Royal Colombo Golf Club, the latter being one of only sixty one Golf Clubs worldwide, to be bestowed the Royal Charter and the second oldest Royal Chartered Golf Club, outside the United kingdom, having received the honour in 1928, at the will and pleasure of His Majesty King George V of England.
The competition format is ‘foursomes’, each team of two players play in a knockout format over the past 17 weeks, culminating in the final on 26th August 2011. This year, Carson’s, who have been the sponsors in this unbroken partnership with the Royal Colombo Golf Club, have planned a fitting celebration at the prize distribution ceremony to celebrate its centenary.
Past winners, participants in the Centenary competition and invitees from Organisations that have participated in the past 100 years too will be invited to this prestigious Event. Carson Cumberbatch which today is a wholly owned Sri Lankan Company was initially incorporated as a Sterling Company in 1871. It has supported the game of Golf since it was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 1879.
