Damages from train collision estimated at over Rs.75M

The Ministry of Transport revealed that the damages from the train collision in Alawwa have been estimated at more than Rs.75 million. A release issued by the Ministry today (18) also stated that a special committee has been appointed in order to investigate and find out the cause for the fatal accident.
It states that while a definite conclusion in regard to the accident has not been reached yet, special attention has been directed towards the manner in which the Railway Control Room and the signaling system operated.
Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama during an inspection of the train wreckage today states that negligence on the part of the train drivers and procedure followed by the officer in charge at the station will be particularly looked into.
He also says that if any certain individual is found at fault, through the investigation report, strict disciplinary action will be taken against the individual.
A total of five persons had been killed and over 30 injured as a result of the train collision which took place in the Alawwa area yesterday (September 17).
