Unknown gunman opens fire on PC and WPC

An unidentified gunman opened fire at a police constable (PC) and a woman police constable (WPC) on Main Street in Kurunegala today morning critically injuring the constable, Police media spokesman SSP Maxi Proctor said.

The police constable, who was shot in the neck, was admitted to the Kurunegala General Hospital subsequent to the incident, which occurred while the two officers were engaged in inspection rounds today.

The perpetrator had arrived on a motorbike and had fired upon the constable unannounced.

Police spokesman added that an extensive investigation has commenced in order to apprehend the suspect.
